I asked David what it was like at Colston Road, East Ham, where mum and dad had a flat from 1944 to 1953. He said that there was a scullery-cum-kitchen and just two rooms. He, mum and dad slept in one room and the rest of us - Sheila, Richard, Susan and myself - slept in the other. There was a large cooking range in the kitchen which was also used to provide boiling water because there was no hot running water. If anyone wanted a bath, a large kettle would be heated on this range and the boiled water poured into a tin bath by hand. I can just remember how, as a very small boy, I would be bathed this way, with the bath on the kitchen table in front of the cooking range.
