The certificates we ordered last week arrived. Here is Amos Rogers’ birth certificate:

Birth of Amos Rogers, a boy, 29th May 1880 at Rushden, Northamptonshire. His father was
Alfred Rogers, a shoemaker. His mother was Sarah Rogers, formerly Whitbread. The informant
was Sarah Rogers, mother from Rushden. The birth was registered on 10th July 1880.

The nice thing about this certificate is that we get a new surname ‘Whitbread’ to add to the family tree. The second certificate was supposed to be George and Kitty Tew, but turned out to be George and Hannah Tew! We’re not sure how this George fits in with our own George but it’s possible that they are father and son. Note that this marriage was witnessed by a George Tew.

Marriage of George Tew and Hannah Meads, 10th February 1850 in the parish church of
Buckingham, Buckinghamshire. He was a widower aged 53, working as a labourer. He lived in
Gawcott and his father was John Tew, a labourer. She was a widow of 45 woth no occupation.
She also lived in Gawcott and her father was Thomas Adams, a labourer. George did not sign his
name. Hannah did, as did the witnesses George Tew and Susannah Tew

Tew, Whitehead

I had another look for George Tew and Kitty Whitehead’s marriage certificate. In 1861 they were living in Westbury which is in the Brackley registration district. I searched for Marriages from Jan-Feb-Mar 1850 to Oct-Nov-Dec 1855 for K WHITEHEAD. There were no Kates, Katherines or Kittys. I looked instead for Marriages from Jan-Feb-Mar 1850 to Oct-Nov-Dec 1855 for CATH WHITEHEAD. I found quite a few which I logged on the GRO References page. I then looked once again for George Tews and although I found a few, none corresponded with a Catherine Whitehouse. Unfortunately I can’t search for her birth to try and establish the standard form of her first name because she was born before the start of civil registration. I looked instead for the birth of their first known child Emma Tew around 1854. My search was for Births from Jan-Feb-Mar 1853 to Apr-May-Jun 1855 for TEW, Emma. I found two, one born in Bradford Yorkshire at the end of 1853 and another the next year in Warwick. Interestingly in the 1861 census (RG9-922-96-7 ) Emma’s place of birth might possibly be Salford. I tried searching for George under the name Lew: Births from Jan-Feb-Mar 1849 to Oct-Nov-Dec 1855 for LEW, Geo. There were no matches. I also searched the IGI for all Kitty/Catherine Whiteheads getting married between 1840 and 1860. I examined all the results: none married a George Tew
