After doing some reorganisation of the website again, I decided to fill in the missing census years for Denis Dineen. We have found him in 1861, 1891 and 1901. I looked first in 1881 and found a good match indexed under the name Dumis Devoven!!!

I looked but could not find him in 1871 I was curious about the birthplaces for Daniel Dineen and Mary Nihan that I discovered in the 1861 census (see RG9-3997-219-25). The census enumerator recorded Daniel’s birthplace as Balemartel. There is no place of that name in Ireland today but I have a feeling, based on other Irish families in the same area, that the Dineens came from southern Ireland, with Cork being a high possibility. I checked an atlas of Ireland and there is a small village caled Ballymartle about 10 miles south-west of Cork which I think is the best candidate for Daniel Dineen’s birthplace. Mary Nihan’s birthplace is recorded as Balethin. Once again, there are no places of that name. There are, however, two villages called Ballyfin in central Ireland. Both are 3 or 4 miles from Portlaoise.
