Tonight we thought we’d try and follow up the Rymell side of the family. What do we know about Rymells?
Alfred Facer married Mary A Rymell in Frimley Surry.
She was working as a servant in Frimly in the 1871 census
She was born circa 1846 in Tring in Hertfordshire
She was working with an Elizabeth Rymell born around 1850 in Tring quite possibly her sister.
There was a family of Rymills livining in Tring 1871. The head was George Rymill, born around 1836
in Oxford.
Tring is in the Berkhampstead registration district which covers: Aldbury, Berkhampstead, Great Berkhampstead, Little Gaddesden, Nettleden (from 1895), Puttenham, Tring, Wigginton. We thought that the best approach was to use the IGI to establish Mary A Rymell’s parentage. We searched for all Mary Rymell events from 1836 to 1856. There were 16. There is a cluster in London, some in Gloucester/Worcester and some in Oxford. None looked immediately like the right one. We looked for Elizabeth, trying to match her up with some parents with the same name. We found:
Christening of Elizabeth Rymall(sic), 28 July 1853, Chalgrove, Oxford. Parents James Rymall and
Hannah
Christening of Mary Ann Rymall(sic), 28 Feb 1849, Chalgrove, Oxford. Parents James Rymall and
Hannah
Chalgrove is 23 miles from Tring. There were some Elizabeths and Mary Anns baptised in Gloucester, but they had different parents - at least three different couples. We decided to check the 1871 census for James and Hannah Rymell but could not find them. We searched for all Rymells (using soundex search) born in Tring - Mary A and Elizabeth were the only matches. We checked all Hannah Rymells (again using soundex) to try and find one living with a James. There were none. We checked the IGI for George Rymell from 1826 to 1846 to see if we could tie him to Elizabeth or Mary Ann. There were 6, none of whom had James and Hannah as parents. The closest was:
Christening of George Rymill, 25 Dec 1830, Banbury Oxford. Parents were John Rymill and Sarah
We checked the GRO for Mary Rymell. There was one in 1846 in Berkhamstead district:
Birth of Mary Ann Rymell, MAR QTR 1846, Berkhamstead district, Bucks, Vol 6 p501
There were quite a few entries for Rymells in the Berkhampstead district:
Name Event Year Quarter District County Volume Page
Mary Ann Rymell Birth 1846 MAR Berkhamsted Bucks 6 501
* Rymell Birth 1847 DEC Berkhamsted Bucks
John Rymell Birth 1853 MAR Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 318

Alfred Rymell Death 1859 MAR Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 228
Martha Rymell Death 1859 MAR Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 228
Emma Rymill Birth 1859 SEP Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 312
Rebecca Rymell Birth 1859 SEP Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 327
Janet Elizabeth Rymell Marriage 1873 SEP Berkhamsted Bucks 3a 608
The Janet Elizabeth possibly married a George Walter Lambourn - he was on the same page. We looked for John Rymell in the 1871 census to see if we could relate him to Mary Ann. There was no sign of him. We looked for Janet Elizabeth Rymell in 1871 - she was definately alive at that time - there was no sign of her. We looked in the 1881 for a Janet Lambourn and found her. Better still she was born in Tring! George was a butler. His employers were out of town.

Janet is quite possibly a sister of Mary Ann and Elizabeth. We immediately tried to find her in the 1871 census by searching for all Janets born in Tring - there were only 3 , none of whom were the right one. Convinced that we’re the victims of transcription errors in both the name and place, we also looked for all Janets born in Hertfdordshire and for all Janets born in Buckinghamshire - there were none that looked like potential matches. We checked the IGI and found her marriage:
Marriage of Janet Elizabeth Rymell and George Walter Lambourn, 10 Aug 1873 in Tring, Hertford.
We couldn’t find her baptism.
So, she was born in Tring around 1851 and was living there in 1873. We looked in the 1871 census for all Janes living in Tring. There were 72 and again none were obvious matches. We looked for all females aged 20 living in Tring. While investigating an Elizabeth Rodwell we spotted a William Rhymell!

We looked this family up in the Ancestry index by searching for Lydia. They were indexed as Plymell!!! There were no other plymells in Tring though We tried to trace William and Lydia in later censuses. We found a Lydia Rymell a widow, born in London, living in Brighton. She was the keeper of a boarding house with 6 boarders and one servant girl:

We also found an Emma Rymell aged 28, born Tring, working as a servant in Marylebone to William Hallett, a Navy Agent

She could be Lydia’s daughter. We looked next for Henry Rymell in the 1881 census and couldn’t find him even after looking for all Henrys born in Herts in 1847, 1848 and 1849. We turned again to Janet Rymell. How did she meet George Lambourn who was later a butler in London? If she is a member of this Rymell family then her mother was born in London. Perhaps we was living with them in 1871 or perhaps she was working as a servant in London then. Perhaps she was working with George? We looked for William and Lydia’s marriage in the IGI, hoping to get her maiden name and thus look for her relations in the 1871 census of London. Once again we drew a blank. We tried the GRO instead. In 1842 we found a William Rummell and a Lydia Morgan on the same page:
Marriage of William Rummell, DEC QTR 1842, Shoreditch, London, Vol 2 p381
We cross-referenced this with the IGI and found it:
Marriage of William Rummell and Lydia Morgan, 26 Dec 1842, Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London
In order to tie this family up we looked for the baptisms of Mary A, Elizabeth and Janet Rymell in the IGI. By finding these we hope to confirm the parents as William and Lydia. We spent a long time looking and found nothing new. On the off-chance that George Lambourn was living with or near Janet Rymell we looked for him in the 1871 census. He was working as a grocer’s porter in Twickenham.

We looked to see if we could find Jane nearby by searching for Jan* as a servant in twickenham and then widening our search to all Jan* servants born in Herts living anywhere in the country. We even looked at all Janets in the country aged 19, 20 or 21. We looked at all the people aged 19, 20 and 21 living in Tring. No luck. In IGI we found the following baptism:
Baptism of Elizabeth Rummell, 18 Jan 1843, Saint John The Baptist, Shoreditch, London. Born 26
Dec 1842. Parents William Rummell and Lydia.
This is clearly the daughter of the William Rummell and Lydia Morgan we had found earlier. This casts doubt on our suggestion that they are the parents of the Henry and Emma Rymells we found in Tring. A way to prove that they are not the same people would be to find them in the 1871 census. There are 4 William Rummells listed in that census, three of which could be of the right age. Two of them are married but not to Lydias. The third is a convict, obviously with no wife listed. There were no Lydia Rummells listed anywhere in England in 1871.
