The next thing to do is to try and find out when George Lay died. Perhaps he died and then Annie Tew returned to her family which would explain why she was in Towcester in 1908. But, if he died before about 1907 then he can’t be Bertie Herbert’s father. If he died after that date then he is still a candidate. He was 52 in 1901. We found 14 George Lays dying between 1901 and 1941. None were after 1910 and none appeared to match either ages or locations. At this time the Ancestry database only contains 50% of all registrations. The next step would be to visit Northampton Records Office and look there. We searched the national archives will database for all wills left by Lays. There were none for George Lay or anyone who looked like they were related to him. We moved on to look for George Tew Jr. in the 1881 censue. While looking we came across another George Tew born in Shalstone around 1827. This could be a cousin of the Annie’s father.

We wondered if Martha Fenn was a relative of this George. It’s possible that she was a Tew who married a Mr Fenn. Perhaps he has recently died and left the farm to George. Our extract of Tew batisms lists a Martha Tew, baptised 1832, daughter of George Tew and Anne Keene. If this were the case, it would make her Annie Tew’s aunt. We searched the IGI but could not find any record of any Martha Tew marrying between 1840 and 1880 (we also searched under Jew, Lew, Few and Tow) We need to sort out all these George Tews in order to determine which baptism records tie up with the Georges we find in the census. To do this we need to link each with his parents in some way. In 1871, we found a George Tew, with his son George Sidney Tew living in Shalstone. This younger George is the right age to be the George who was a farmer in 1881:

This George almost certainly moved to Basingstoke with his son sometime before 1881. In Basingstoke he used his carpentry skills to set himself up as a builder, wheelwright and undertaker! What took them all the way to Basingstoke? Could it be the ineritance of a farm by his son? On the same page, living a few houses away was John and Jemima Tew:
