I looked up the PRO reference for Henry Alcock’s army records. I think the correct reference is WO97/4242 (Aken-Alder). This covers dates 1900 to 1913 and is held at Kew. He was 39 in 1901 so should have been discharged before 1913. Here’s a summary of yesterday’s Alcock family we found:

We first of all searched the IGI for George Tews marrying between 1849 - 1869. There were 4 Georges marrying in this period, none of them to a Kate. We repeated the search for Lew and Jew with no luck. We searched then in the GRO and found a George Tew marrying in Buckingham:

Barry shows George marrying a Kitty Whitehead. We searched the GRO index for her and found three:

We searched for Kate Whitehead and Katherine Whitehead marriages from 1845 to 1865 - there were none. There are about 10 Catherine Whiteheads being married in this period, but none in the Northants/Bucks area. We also searched for all Whitehead marriages in Bucks or Northants for this period. There were no Kates/Kitties or Catherine-like names. We turned to the 1871 census to try and find George and Kate. There were no Kates of the right age, born in Westbury at all. There were two George Tews who were born in Shalstone, both in their 40s. However their wives and children were completely different. We also searched for any Thomas born in Westbury aged 7, 8 or 9 - there were none that seemed to match. Finally we found them indexed under Tow. Looking at the scan of the original document it’s clear that the name is Tew, so this has been badly indexed.

This explains the Kitty on Barry’s tree. We had a look for George Tew’s baptism in the IGI for 1824 +/- 5 years. There were three:

We checked to see if any of these were buried between 1824 and 1834 - there were no burials in that period. We think our George Tew is most likely to be the one baptised in Shalstone We then looked again for George and Kate/Kitty’s marriage. We tried lots of different combinations but found nothing. The next line of attack is to try and find the baptisms of their children in the IGI. These are the Tews being baptised in that area:

Interestingly we came across an Annie Maria Tew, baptised in 1873 in Syresham who was recorded as having married a Thomas Samuel Somerton on 20 MAR 1894 also in Syresham. In order to eliminate her from this branch of the family we tried to find her in the 1881 census. She was living with her mother in Syresham:

We also came across a reference to the marriage of George Tew and Anne Keene on 29 May 1815 in Shalstone There were lots of Tews in Gawcott contemporary with the Shalstone Tews. There were several in Grendon Underwood in the 1700s and many in Twyford in the 1700s and 1800s
