Noticed that some had parish of vessels. A search for all vessels in Wales gave 6693 results. I restricted search to Monmouthshire which resulted in 1027 matches. I scanned this list but found no likely matches for Joseph Hemmings. I also searched for all people born in America who were present in Monmouthshire. Search for all people named Joseph who were lodgers in Monmouthshire. 182 matches checked. Same for boarders which had 74 matches. I then searched for Josephs aged 30 in Monmouthshire. There were 46 matches, I’ve just had a breakthrough! I was experimenting with different searches and was using the keyword field in ancestry’s search form. I searched for Bridget and Widow and up popped the following:

Interestingly Jane is listed as an “Emms” yet Bridget did not marry Joseph until 1872! I immediately looked for John Bryant in the 1891 census. I found two:

I suspect this latter John Bryant to be Bridget’s son, despite the middle initial, due to the occupation and location. I came across another John Bryant in the 1901 census for Somerset:

I looked for John’s birth in the GRO index. Coincidently there was also a Hannah Hemmings born at the same time:

I searched for John Bryan(t)’s deaths in Monmouthshire. There were two at the turn of the century:

We would need to get these two certificates to determine whether either were our John or whether he did indeed move to Somerset. I searched for Francis Hemmings in the 1891 census for Wales but there was no obvious match. He would have been about 18. Perhaps Louisa was with him? I searched the GRO index for Jane Hemmings marriages. I found one in 1892. The index unfortunately doesn’t show any details other than the names on the same page:

I don’t know if this list is ordered in any way but perhaps Jane married Henry Smith or Henry Gough. It might explain why she wasn’t living with her mother in the 1891 census - perhaps she was with her husband to be?
